Kings County

Kings County is a county in the state of New York.  However, it is one of 5 counties that are coterminous with New York City's 5 boroughs.  These counties (Boroughs) do not have functioning county governments.  The county seat of these Boroughs is New York City.  Kings County shares the same boundaries as Brooklyn.  It is the most populous county in New York with a population of approximately 2,600,000 residents.

During the first half of the nineteenth century Kings County (Brooklyn) saw significant growth.  The population expanded more than threefold from 1800 to 1820 and then again doubled in the 1820's, and yet again in the 1930's.  In 1954 the city of Williamsburgh was annexed by Kings County (Brooklyn) and lost the final "h" of its name during the process.  With the addition of Williamsburg, the area grew from a good sized community of 36,236 to an fairly influential city of 96,838.

The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883 which eased the trip to Manhattan.  In 1894 it was voted that Brooklyn join Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens and Richmond to become the five boroughs of New York City.  This vote took effect in 1892 and Kings County retained its status as one of the 5 counties of New York State.
