New York City is located in Kings County and is situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors. The city has been described as "the cultural capital of the world". It is the most populous and diverse city in the United States, with approximately 800 languages spoken within its borders. 

New York City was founded as a trading post in 1624, and named New Amsterdam in 1626. It was renamed "New York" in honor of the Duke of York, who received the land from his brother, King Charles II. From 1785 to 1790, New York was considered the capital of the United States.

Today the city is a center for finance, art, media, fashion, education, and entertainment.
