Ohio became the 17th state on March 1, 1803.  It's name came from the Iroquois word ohi-yo which means great river.  Ohio's nickname is the "Buckeye State" which comes from the Ohio buckeye tree and the residents are generally known as "Buckeyes."

Although President signed the act of Congress that approved the boundaries and constitution of Ohio on February 19, 1803, Congress had not yet begun the custom of declaring an official statehood until 1812 when Louisiana was admitted as the 18th state.  Therefore, in 1953, when the oversight was discovered, George H. Bender, an Ohio Congressman, introduced a bill to admit Ohio to the Union which would be retroactive back to March 1, 1803.  President Eisenhower signed the act declaring March 1, 1803 as the date of Ohio's admittance to the Union on August 7, 1953.  This was the year of Ohio's 150th anniversary.

Ohio is an excellent choice as a location to host a wedding.  There are many wonderful venues available from winery weddings at one of Ohio's many vineyards to a wedding in the Statehouse (as pictured above).  There are also many state parks that offer excellent venues where a couple can host a beautiful outdoor wedding or something more traditional at the Ohio State Parks Lodges and Conference Centers. These state park facilities can accommodate all the wedding festivities including lodging for the couple and all their guests.

Ohio has a temperate climate that is considered humid continental.  It receives both rainfall and snowfall with over half of its annual rainfall occurring between May and October.  When planning a wedding in Ohio, you will want to keep the weather in mind and plan accordingly.

With many large cities such as Columbus and Cleveland, there are numerous resources for all the wedding accessories you will need to complete your wedding checklist.  You will be able to find everything from bridal gowns to bridesmaids dresses, to wedding favors no matter what area of Ohio you choose to host your wedding.
