Philadelphia County

Philadelphia County is a county that is located in the state of Pennsylvania with a population of roughly 1,530,000 residents which makes it the most populated county in the state of Pennsylvania, however it is the second smallest in land area at 142.6 square miles.  Philadelphia County has been coterminous with the city of Philadelphia, which is also its county seat, since 1856.

The first known occupants of the area that is now known as Philadelphia County were the tribes of Lenape.  In 1682 the "blueprint" for Philadelphia was laid out and it was made the capital and county seat of Pennsylvania.

At one point in time the city and county government acted separately, but by the middle of the 19th century it was obvious that a more structured government was necessary.  In 1951, the Home Rule Charter completely merged the county and city government offices.  It provided a common structure to the city and the "strong mayor" form of government was outlined which is still in use today.

There are many wonderful places to host a wedding in Philadelphia County.  Many potential venues are historic sites as well.  You can host your wedding at the historic Powel House, which is the location George and Martha Washington hosted their anniversary celebration in 1779, or you can plan a spectacular outdoor wedding at the Japanese House and Garden which is also known as Pine Breeze Villa and Shofuso. The Japanese House and Garden is a part of Fairmont Park which is Philadelphia's Park System.  The park system offers many different venues where you can host either a large elaborate wedding or just a small, intimate wedding.

Shopping for wedding accessories will be easy on Chestnut Street.  This is a walking shopping district with many unique shops and eateries. You can even host a rehearsal dinner at one of the many restaurants on the street or stop in at Sephora for wedding supplies such as makeup.  You are sure to enjoy the day and most likely find many of the items on your wedding checklist.
