Texas was originally claimed by Spain and was home to a French colony for a very short period of time.  After that Mexico was in control of the territory until Texas won it's independence in 1936 at which time it became an independent republic.  Texas joined the United States as its 28th state in 1845.

Texas boasts 15 major rivers with the largest being the Rio Grande.  The other major rivers include the Red River, the Pecos, Colorado and the Brazos.  Texas also has 3,700 named streams but has very few natural lakes.  Because of the lack of natural lakes, the citizens of Texas have built over 100 artificial reservoirs.
