Dallas is a city in Dallas County, Texas. Covering a total area of 385.8 square miles, Dallas is the 9^th most populous city in the US and the third most populous in the state of Texas. The city is also part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, which is the 4^th largest metropolitan area in the US and the largest in the American South.

Founded in 1841, Dallas was  incorporated as a city in 1856. The prominence of the city arose from its importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries. It was located along numerous railroad lines, and this helped it to grow. It was also a focal point of the north-south as well as east-west interstate system.

Presently, it is one of the largest cities in the world with a large economy based on banking, healthcare, energy, telecommunications, commerce and transportation just to name a few. Dallas also has the 3rd highest concentration of fortune 500 companies in America and is home to a large number of billionaires.
