People first settled in Hempstead in 1643. The city grew and went on to be incorporated in 1853. Back then, its main economic activity was agriculture.  Prominent leaders of the US revolution, including George Washington, often stayed in the city. In the 19^th century, the city of Hempstead was an important trading center for Long Island.
