Grosse Pointe Woods is located in Wayne County. It is 3.3 miles and the only one of five Grosse Pointe communities without a shoreline on Lake St. Clair.

The other "Pointe" communities are Grosse Pointe Shores, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Farms, and Grosse Pointe. 

Grosse Pointe Woods was incorporated in 1927 under the name "Village of Lochmoor". Its name was changed to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1939.

Most of the city was built during the housing boom after World War II, when the population increased by 45%. Grosse Pointe Woods was re-incorporated as a city in 1950. It is a predominately white community, with over 96% of residents being of European descent.
