Harper Woods City is located in Wayne County. It is surrounded by Detroit, Eastpointe, Grosse Pointe Woods, and St. Clair Shores. 

It was incorporated on February 19, 1951. The city was named for its wooded land and the main road, Harper Avenue, which was named after the founder of Harper Hospital in Detroit. 

Harper Woods was home to the first drive-in theater Midwest, which could hold up to 970 vehicles. The city was also home to the popular dance club, The Hideout, where musicians Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, Ted Nugent, and Glenn Frey once performed.
