Southgate City

Southgate City is located in Wayne County. The city's name is derived from explanations that local guides gave to visitors. They called the area the "south gate" into Detroit. Southgate's slogan is "The Symbol of Progress Downriver".

Southgate was part of the Ecorse Township before it was incorporated in October of 1958. It was originally home to the Wyandot and Potawatomi Native American tribes.

The first European settler was Rene Robert Cavalier LaSalle, who arrived in 1679. French missionaries, traders, and explorers soon followed. The community's development quickened after the Erie Canal was completed in 1830.
