Hamtramck City

Hamtramck City is located in Wayne County. It is surrounded by Detroit and Highland Park. The city is named after the commander of Fort Shelby, Jean François Hamtramck.

Early settlers in Hamtramck were primarily German farmers, followed by Polish immigrants in 1914. For many years, the population consisted mainly of Polish residents and was often confused with Poletown.

Currently, the Polish population has dwindled to 14.5%. Hamtramck is Michigan's most diverse community, with a large number of Middle Eastern and South Asian immigrants.
