Inkster is located in Wayne County, about 17 miles west of Detroit. The area was originally home several Native American tribes before settlers arrived in 1825.

The city was named after Scottish-born Robert Inkster, who operated a sawmill in the city. Its first post office opened in 1857, and was named "Moulin Rouge" until it was renamed after Inkster in 1863.

The village was incorporated in 1926. Inkster achieved city status in 1964. It is primarily a bedroom community, but has areas of light industry and commerce. 

Notable natives and residents include football players Tyrone Wheatley and Keshawn Martin, and model Geraldine Doyle.
