Livonia, which is named after a city in New York, is located in Wayne County. It is only 13 miles from downtown Detroit. The area was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native Americans. 

The first white settlers were drawn to area because of its fertile soil. By 1835, the land was filled with successful orchards and dairy farms. Livonia's borders were established on March 17, 1835. 

After World War II, Livonia became primarily residential, commercial, and industrial. The city was incorporated on May 23, 1950.

Notable natives and residents include actress Judy Greer, painter Dana Shutz, and professional hockey player Chris Conner.
