Oakland is a city that is located in Alameda County, California. It is the county seat of Alameda County, and it covers an area of about 78 square miles. This port city is among the largest cities on the San Francisco Bay area, coming in as the third largest.

In the 1770s, the area that is presently Oakland belonged to the Spanish. The Spanish turned over ownership to the Mexicans after they (Mexicans) gained independence from the Spanish. The Mexicans also handed over the city to the Americans after the Mexican – American War.  It was a logging area back then.

Presently, Oakland is among the most ethnically diverse major cities in the United States.  Marine cargo transport is a major economic activity in the city. Notable people born or who have lived there for a considerable period of time include actors Clint Eastwood and Bruce Lee as well as musician Keyshia Cole.
