Grapevine City is located in Tarrant County. It is situated near Grapevine Lake, which is used as both a recreational area and a water source. The city is named for the wild grapes native to the area.

General Richard Montgomery Gano was instrumental in keeping the area safe from Comanche raiding parties. The land was open to homesteaders following the 1843 treaty of "peace, friendship, and commerce".

Grapevine experienced steady growth throughout the 19th century. It was incorporated in 1936. 

Grapevine was primarily agricultural until the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which encouraged commercial growth. The city depends heavily on revenue from tourism and the hotels surrounding the airport. 

Notable natives and residents include singer Norah Jones, actress Jenna Dewan, and film critic Joe Bob Briggs.
