Miami Gardens is located in Miami-Dade County. It was originally called "Liberty City", and then "Norland". Finally, it  was named after one of its main avenues, "Miami Gardens Drive". The city was incorporated on May 13, 2003. 

Miami Gardens is a diverse community consisting of Cubans, African Americans, Haitians, Jamaicans, Dominicans, and Nicaraguans. It is the largest city in Florida with a majority African American population.

The Miami Dolphins and their home field, Sun Life Stadium, are both based in Miami Gardens. The stadium hosts the annual Orange Bowl and is also home to the University of Miami Hurricanes football team.
