Florida City is located in Miami-Dade County and surrounded by Homestead and the unincorporated communities of Redland, Leisure City, Naranja, and Princeton.

It is situated on the Miami Rock Ridge, at the end of the only road through the Everglades National Park. Before the area was cleared for farming, it was filled with South Florida Slash Pine Trees, also known as "Dade County Pine".

Florida City began as a land promotion named Detroit in 1910. Families stayed in the nearby city of Homestead while they waited for their homes to be built. It was re-named and incorporated in 1914. The city was an agricultural center which grew potatoes, squash, and tomatoes. Today it is primarily residential, with a thriving tourist business.
