North Miami Beach is a city that is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida with a population of approximately 41,500 residents.  The city is 5.3 square miles in area. Interestingly, North Miami Beach actually has no beaches within its city limits.  

The city was originally named Fulford after a captain in the United States Coast Guard, Captain William F. Fulford and was then incorporated in 1927 with the name of Fulford. However, it was given it current name of North Miami Beach in 1931.   

In the great hurricane of 1926, the city, which was still unincorporated sustained a great deal of devastating damage.  The radio station and speedway were blown down and demolished.  The hurricane essentially ended the real estate boom in South Florida and it did not take off again until after World War II.  In an effort to try to raise funds and gain assistance after the hurricane, the local residents came together and created the Town of Fulford which was incorporated in 1927 as the City of Fulford.
