Sunny Isles Beach City is located in Miami-Dade County. It is situated in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The city is primarily commercial and residential. 

The area was originally bought in 1920 to be developed into a tourist resort. It was named "Sunny Isles" and nicknamed "The Venice of America". The Haulover bridge, which connected the city to Miami Beach, was finished in 1925 and stimulated growth.

Sunny Isles Beach is home to Ocean Palm, the first two-story motel in the United States. In the 1950's and 1960's, over 30 hotels were built along Collins Avenue. The city became a popular tourist destination, with numerous themed motels along "Motel Row".
