Coral Gables is a city that is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida with a population of approximately 47,500 residents.  It is located just southwest of Downtown Miami and is home to the University of Miami.  Coral Gables is 37.2 square miles in total area of which 24 square miles is water.  

Coral Gables was one of the very first planned communities and was instrumental in the development of the gated community and homeowners association.  It is very well known for its strict zoning regulations.  The city was developed during the Florida land boom of the 1920's. and it's architecture is almost completely Mediterranean Revival Style.   

Coral Gables adopted a Historical Resources Ordinance in 1973 and it was one of the first cities in Florida to do so.  A Historical Resources Board was created and a procedure was established for local landmark designations.  Currently Coral Gables is home to one of only three National Landmarks that are located in Miami-Dade County -- The Biltmore Hotel, which was designated in 1996.  Coral Gables also has nine additional properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  These include the Coral Gables Merrick House, Coral Gables City Hall, and the Venetian Pool.
