South Miami is a city that is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida and is a Miami suburb with a population of approximately 11,000.  The city is only 2.3 square miles in size.  

Originally the area was called Larkins after the owner of the land, W.A. Larkins.  He was also the first Postmaster.  The area incorporated in 1926 and because Miami, which was north of the city, was such as booming metropolis, the newly incorporated city took the name South Miami.  The city was originally about 6 square miles in size, but in 1933 it was reduced to just over 3 miles in an effort to reduce its municipal responsibilities. The size was reduced yet again in 1937 to its current size.  This is the reason the city has such irregular boundaries today.
