Miami Springs City

Miami Springs is a suburban city in Miami-Dade County, Florida.  Like Opa-Locka, it was founded by Glenn Curtiss during the "land boom" of the 1920's.  It was originally named Country Club Estates.  It was one of the first planned communities in Florida along with Coral Gables and Opa-Locka.

Like Opa-Locka and Coral Gables, Miami Springs was built with a theme in mind.  The particular theme for this city was Pueblo Revival and most of its architecture reflects that style.  Other buildings reflect the Mission style design.  Shortly before its incorporation in 1926, the city was renamed after a spring in the area.

Miami Springs is 3.0 square miles in total area and has a population of approximately 13,000 residents.  The airline industry has always brought many residents to the area and has provided employment opportunities as well.  This, in turn, brought prosperity to the city.  However, with the city depending on the airline industry, it made itself vulnerable and when two major airlines collapsed in 1991, many of the area residents were left unemployed and not able to afford living in their neighborhoods.

There are a few notable historic sites in the Miami Springs area. One is the Curtiss Mansion which is a Pueblo style home that belonged to the city's founder, Glenn Curtiss.  The home suffered two fires which were thought to be arson and very little was left of the home.  Only a burned out shell remained.  However, the outside of the mansion has been restored by local activists and architects.  There is also Fair Haven Nursing Home which once served as a hotel and a sanitarium at one point.

We have searched the area and found resources to help you in your wedding planning.  If you are a do-it-yourself type couple, you can find wedding invitation kits at Office Depot.  Once the invitations are complete, you may be planning a religious ceremony.  If so, you can contact the Poinciana United Methodist Church.  Once everything is arranged, you will want to relax the night before your wedding.  Why not drop in at Holleman's Restaurant for your rehearsal dinner.  They have a banquet room that can accommodate your entire wedding party.
