Up until 1923, Solana Beach city was called Lockwood Mesa. It was first settled by George H. Jones, a farmer, in 1886. Rapid development of this city began with the construction of Lake Hodges Dam in 1917-18.

Developer and community leader Colonel Ed Fletcher bought about 140 acres of land from George H. Jones to develop what is now Solana Beach. He and his brother in law Eugene Batchelder used hydraulic water pressure to erode away tons of earth and created the Fletcher cove entry and beach. The beach was opened on the 4th of July 1925, and the city grew slowly after that.

Solana Beach received national attention when in 2003, it became the first city in Continental US to ban smoking on its public beaches. Other cities in Coastal California followed that trend thereafter. However, Solana Beach was the last city to ban consumption of alcohol in North San Diego County.

Famous residents from Solana Beach include but are not limited to rapper Lil Rob and comedian Rene Sandoval.
