Imperial Beach is a city in San Diego County, California. This residential beach city is home to about 26,000 people and it covers an area of 4.5 square miles. Imperial Beach is in the South Bay area of San Diego, 14.1 miles to the South of downtown San Diego and just 5 miles to the northwest of Tijuana in Mexico.

Imperial Beach was founded in 1887 and derives its name from Imperial County in California. The first settlers in the area were farmers and landowners who came from Imperial Valley in search of cooler weather during summer.

Imperial Beach encompasses almost 4 miles of beach, which includes a dog friendly area. There are lifeguards who are employed all year round, making it a safe beach. Popular sports in this city include beach volleyball and surfing.

Boca Rio beach break and Imperial Beach pier in the city are some of the best surfing spots in the county of San Diego. The San Diego Magazine ranks the Boca Rio beach break as the 2^nd best surfing spot in the county.

Imperial Beach city connects to nearby Coronado city through the silver strand isthmus and is also home to the Tijuana Estuary. It also boasts of a large Navy Presence, with the US Naval Landing Field Imperial Beach located in the city.
