El Cajon City is located in San Diego County. It is situated in a valley, surrounded by mountains, and is nicknamed "The Big Box". In Spanish its name means "the drawer". El Cajon was incorporated in 1912. The climate is considered arid-Mediterranean.

The city sits on land that was part of the Rancho El Cajon Mexican land grant made to Maria Antonia Estudillo in 1845. Amaziah Lord Knox built a hotel in El Cajon in 1876. It was used by people searching for gold who were traveling between San Diego and Julian. The hotel charged guests one dollar, which purchased room and board.

Notable residents have included Rolling Stone rock critic Lester Bangs, director Glen Morgan, and baseball player Aaron Boone.
