Balch Springs is a city that is located in Dallas County, Texas with a population of approximately 24,000 residents.   It is approximately 16 miles east of Downtown Dallas and is bounded by Mesquite on the north and on the east and Dallas on the south and on the west.  It is approximately 34 miles southeast of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.  Balch Springs is 9 square miles in size. 

The area that is now Balch Springs was first settled in the 1840's.  The city's name comes from John M. Balch who settled in the area around 1879.  He has several springs on his land and the local residents referred to them as Balch Springs.  The name stuck even after Mr. Balch and his family moved away.  

To avoid being annexed by Dallas, the city incorporated in June, 1953.  By 1956, the city had a population of about 3,500 residents and continued to rapidly grow.  There was an attempt in 1966 to disincorporate the city, but it proved unsuccessful.  As construction of new roads continued, so did the growth of the Balch Springs.
