University Park is a city that is located in Dallas County, Texas with a population of approximately 23,000 residents.  It is an inner suburb of Dallas.  Southern Methodist University makes its home in University Park.  The city has an area of only 3.7 square miles.  Because the city is surrounded by Dallas, the addresses use Dallas as the city designation rather than University Park.  

University Park started as a small group of homes that surrounded the new Southern Methodist University which was founded in 1915.  The university was responsible for supplying utility service to the homes until 1924 because the growing population could not be supported by the school any longer.  The area sought annexation into Highland Park but were refused and Dallas also refused their request.  Because of this, the area incorporated as a separate city in April, 1924.  When the city first incorporated, there was 1,200 residents.   

Because of the efforts to improve the city, it grew to a population of over 20,000 by 1945.  As a matter of fact, the area's tax value and attractiveness had risen so high that now Dallas wanted to annex the city.  The Board of Commissioners were in favor of the annexation, but the voters decided differently.  The population of the area has remained relatively stable in the low 20,000's since the 1940's.
