Indio is a city that is located in Riverside County, California with a growing population of approximately 76,000 residents.  It is located just 26 miles east of Palm Springs.  It's name is derived from the Spanish word for Indian.  The city encompasses an area of 75.6 square miles.  

Indio was created because there was a need for a halfway point on the Southern Pacific Railroad between Los Angeles and Yuma, Arizona.  The engines needed to be re-filled with water and cleaned of the sand that had been taken in.  The city was originally called Indian Wells. However, because so many places already used that name, a variation of the Spanish word for Indian, Indio, was chosen.
