Brea, which means "tar" in Spanish, is located in Orange County. It was incorporated on February 23, 1917.

The area was originally inhabited by the Native Americans. When explorer Gaspar de Portola arrived in 1769, he thought the Native Americans were "dirty" because they used the abundant crude oil as topical medicine. Brea was once a center for crude oil production. Today it is residential and commercial.

Brea was recently named one of the five best suburbs in the Western United States by Sunset magazine. It is known for its public art program which began in 1975. There are currently over 140 pieces of artwork located throughout the city.
