Buena Park is located in Orange County, 12 miles from downtown Santa Ana. It is 10.6 square miles and surrounded by Fullerton, Anaheim, La Palma, Cerritos, and La Mirada. It is situated on land that was once part of the Rancho Los Coyotes land grant.

Buena Park was transferred from Spain to Mexico in 1822, and became part of the United States in 1848, after the Mexican-American War.

The city was founded in 1887 by James A. Whitaker, a grocer from Chicago. It was primarily agricultural and grew wine and citrus products. Today the city is residential and commercial.  Buena Park was incorporated in 1953 and is nicknamed "Center of the Southland".
