Lawndale City is in the South Bay and located in Los Angeles County. It was originally part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo land grant. Charles B. Hopper was the first to subdivide the area into individual plots in 1905, but land sold slowly. The city was finally incorporated on December 28, 1959.
Lawndale's low housing prices in the 1970's attracted the eye of absentee landlords. As a result, many of Lawndale's residents became renters. The renting trend has continued, but the city is currently trying to attract more home owners with an ongoing urban renewal project.
Notable residents and natives include Roy Rogers and Fred Dryer.
