Elgin City is about 40 miles from Chicago. It lies primarily in Kane County, but a small portion is in Cook County.
The Native Americans who originally lived in the area were expelled with the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and the Black Hawk Indian War of 1832. James T. Gifford and his brother Hezekiah founded the city near the Fox River in 1835, and named it after the Scottish hymn, "The Song of Elgin".

Elgin was first known for being a key producer of dairy products, but the dairy industry became less important for their economy after the Elgin Watch Company opened. The watch factory was the largest manufacturer of fine watches in the United States until the mid 20th century. Even though the factory was torn down in 1965, the clocks at Chicago's Union Station still have the Elgin name.
