Markham City is located in Cook County. The city is 5 square miles and surrounded by Posen, Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, and Oak Forest. It is situated on a lake plain that was formed by a glacier. The area was originally home to the Chippewa, Potawatomi, and Ottawa Native Americans.

The first farmers arrived in the 1830's, followed by a large German and Irish immigrant influx in the 1840's. By the 20th century Markham was an industrial city, which attracted a large African American population. Today over 80% of residents in the city are of African descent.
Markham is home to the Indian Boundary Prairies, which are 2,500 acres of untouched prairies. Dropseed, Sundrop, Paintbrush, and Gensburg prairies are considered National Natural Landmarks.
Notable natives of Markham include baseball players Danny McClain and Cliff Floyd.
