Willow Springs Village, which is known to geologists as Mt. Forest Island, is located in Cook County. It was originally home to several Native American tribes and used as a burial site and hunting ground. Today most residents are from Polish, German, Italian, or Irish descent.

Willow Springs was once a favorite picnic spot for Chicago residents who wanted to escape the city. They would bring kegs of beer and relax along the Des Plaines River, which they called "Lake Willow Springs".
Harvesting ice from the river was a major industry for the village from 1870 to 1880. Canal workers were also attracted to Willow Springs after the construction of the Sanitary and Ship Canal.
