Park Forest Village is located in Cook County and Will County. The first white resident was Adam Brown, who settled in 1833 at the corner of present day Sauk Trail and Chicago Road. Methodist abolitionists John and Sabra McCoy were the next to follow, and built a farmstead in 1834, which became the largest part of Park Forest. During the Civil War they used their home as a hiding spot for the Underground Railroad.
Park Forest became a successful development after World War II, when Philip M. Kutznik created a plan to provide housing for over 5,000 families, a park system, and one of the first major outdoor shopping centers in the United States. Park Forest was designed by Elbert Peets, who built housing for World War II veterans. The city was then nicknamed "GI Town".
