Hickory Hills City, which was once called North Palos, is located in Cook County. It was named for the rolling hills and groves of hickory trees. The city is primarily residential. Its western side is forest preserve, which it shares with Palos Park, Palos Heights, and Palos Hills.
The area was home to Native Americans before white settlers displaced them in the 1830's. Hickory Hills grew slowly, because it sits over the Saganashkee Slough, which makes it difficult to farm.
The population was initially about 250. Many of the residents had horse stables and enjoyed rural life. During World War II, Hickory Hills developed cheap housing units, which were home to migrant workers for the defense industry. The city was incorporated in 1951, after the residents decided they wanted control over building codes.
