Lyons is a village that is located in Cook County, Illinois and has a population of approximately 10,500. Lyons village has an area of 2.2 square miles.
Incorporated in 1888, Lyons has a rich history. In the late 1600's French Explorer Louis Joliet came up with the idea of constructing a canal to connect the Chicago River to the Des Plaines River through the area known as Le Portage. His idea became a reality some 200 years later and the Illinois to Michigan Canal was opened. There is a statue that stands in Lyons today at the Chicago Portage National History Sight that commemorates this historic corridor.
