Park Ridge City is located 15 miles from downtown Chicago. The Potawatomi Native Americans were the first inhabitants, but they were removed from the area in accordance with the 1833 treaty. The town was originally called Pennyville in honor of George Penny, a prominent brick making businessman. The soil in Park Ridge is rich with clay deposits, which makes it perfect for brick building.

When the city was developing, its leaders wanted to achieve the look of a traditional New England town, so they discouraged the development of apartment buildings and opted instead for homes on large, green lawns. The population is primarily white Anglo-Saxon Protestant, but Polish Roman Catholics are growing in numbers.
