South Holland Village is located in Cook County, and is situated on low ground near the Calumet River. It was incorporated in 1894. The first white settlers in the area arrived from the Netherlands in 1846. The village began as an agricultural community that specialized in onion growing, and became known as the "Onion Set Capital of the World".
All businesses in South Holland, excluding hotels, restaurants, and gas stations, are closed on Sundays. There is also no alcohol sold within the village limits. The motto of South Holland is "A Community of Churches".
