River Forest Village is located in Cook County, Illinois. It is situated along the eastern bank of the Des Plaines River. The village is known for the elegant houses that were built at the turn of the century, many of which were designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. River Forest currently has some of the highest property values in the region.
The Ojiba, Menominee, and Potawatomi Native American tribes were the first inhabitants, followed by white settlers in the 1830's. Early industries included agriculture and hog farming. The sawmill, which was constructed by the river, was also important to the village's economy.
River Forest was once home to Edwin Perkins, who invented Kool-Aid and to James Dewar, who invented the Twinkie. Other notable residents include director Chris Columbus and baseball player Carlos Zambrano.
