Deerfield Village is located in Lake County, with a small portion being in Cook County. The village was named for the large deer population. The Potawatomi Native Americans originally inhabited the area and navigated the land through the Des Plaines, Fox, and Chicago Rivers.

Jacob Cadwell, who arrived in 1835, was the first white settler in the area. He was soon followed by Irish immigrants. The land was desirable to farmers due to the fertile soil and its close proximity to three rivers, which made it easy to receive supplies and to export timber and wheat to Chicago.
Deerfield is currently the headquarters for major corporations such as Walgreens, Fortune Brands, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Baxter Healthcare, Business Technology Partners, APAC Customer Services, and U.S. Consumers Digest.
