Summit is a village that is located in Cook County, Illinois with a population of approximately 11,000. The village is probably best known for being the setting to Ernest Hemingway's short story "The Killers." Summit has a total are of 2.3 square miles and even though it's name is "Summit," most of the village is actually in the Des Plaines River floodplain.
At the time of its incorporation in 1890, Summit's population was 547. However, it rose to 4,109 by 1920. In its early stages Summit was known for the quality of its produce and shipments of vegetables were sold in Chicago in large quantities.
Manufacturing and services diversified after World War I. Its newspaper, the Des Plaines Valley News began in 1913. From 1916 to 1922, the Elgin Motor Car Company produced in excess of 8,000 automobiles. Food processing companies were established and the rail yards transferred meat from the Chicago stockyards. In the 1950's, the canal was filled in so that land could be used for the Stevenson Expressway.
