Harwood Heights Village is located in Cook County, only 11 miles from the Chicago Loop. The village is surrounded by Chicago and Norridge. Its name is a combination of two words. "Har" is for Harlem Avenue and "wood" is taken from the Norwood Park Township.
The land was first settled in 1835 by Israel Smith, who built his home on Union Ridge. After his family built homes nearby, the ridge received the nickname "Smith's Ridge".

Herbert Huening was the first president of Harwood Heights. Early residents hoped for annexation by Chicago, but their bid was rejected in 1947. As a result, development was slow and residents had no police protection. The residents also had to deal with muddy streets and frequent floods. The city eventually embraced independence and organized its government and services.
