Berwyn City is in Cook County and was formed in 1908, after breaking off from the Cicero township. Thomas F. Baldwin was the first settler to purchase land in the area, which was originally a marshland. Today, all that is left of the marsh is a swampy area on the edge of the city called Mud Lake.

Berwyn City is known for The Spindle sculpture, which was created by artist Dustin Shuler. The Spindle was featured in the movie Wayne's World, but despite efforts to save it, was destroyed on May 2, 2008, to make room for a new Walgreens.
Berwyn has also been used as a location for select scenes in A League of Their Own and Wanted.
