Matteson was established by German immigrants in the mid-1850's and quickly became an agricultural trade center due to its close proximity to three railroad lines. It was named after James Matteson, the Illinois governor at the time it was founded.
The village was incorporated in 1889, with only 500 residents. Matteson was primarily white until 1990, with African Americans making up about half of the population. By the year 2000, African Americans outnumbered white residents two to one.
