Crete Village is located in Will County. The village was established alongside the well-traveled wagon road known as Hubbard's Trail and founded in 1836 by Willard and Dyantha Wood.
It was originally called "Wood's Corner", but was re-christened in 1843. Crete's name was chosen from the New Testament writings of St. Paul.
German immigrants began arriving in the 1840's and soon made up the majority of the population. Crete was once the commercial center for the eastern part of the county. Early industries included farming and woodworking. The village was a crucial stop for the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, and is currently home to the Bible League's International Headquarters.
