Hazel Crest Village is located Cook County, about 25 miles from the Chicago Loop. It was incorporated in 1912. The village was first settled in 1870 under the name South Harvey. The name was changed to Hazel Crest in 1900 due to the large number of hazelnut bushes that grew in the area.
Early landowner William McClintock bought 80 acres of land in Hazel Crest and built a train depot, which encouraged growth and attracted Polish, Serbian, and Italian immigrants. The current population is approximately 14,816. A small percentage of the residents are descendants of the first families to settle the village, but the majority of the population is African American.
